Dear Start My Car,

Black Friday is adored by some and detested by others. And I think I might understand why. Retailers often see it as an opportunity to move sticky items. They might have been sitting with product that they have been unable to turn and are therefore willing and able to discount them greatly. Those in need of those particular products are able to take advantage and buy them for much cheaper.

In the case of fast moving, high demand items, this is often a different story. These products are often sold at low margin as the retailer relies on a quick and high turn around. So they sell more of them at lower profit. What this means is that they don’t have the flexibility to discount significantly in order to make Black Friday interesting.

What does this mean for buyers? In essence, look for items that you might need at that time, but are not in high demand. That is where you are most likely to score.

Motor spares are more complicated as they are vehicle specific. We generally offer a set discount across a category, eg shock absorbers. The up side of this is that anyone looking for this type of product will find a suitable one that is discounted, the downside is that there will be both popular and slow moving items in the category which limits our ability to go too deep on the discount. We compensate by going deep on our non vehicle specific products that are not commonly turned over, Black Friday is a good time to buy them.

We do have some fantastic offers and specials. And we have been, and will be running them throughout the month of Black Friday. Be smart. Be responsible and save.

Hope you have a fantastic weekend.

Regards,

Baruch.
