As we continue to move through, what has been deemed ‘black Friday month’ by many e-tailers and retailers alike, its ironic that, as South Africans we continue to find ourselves in the dark, due to consistent load-shedding.

I am by no means an expert in this, but with summer here and the addition of extra hours of sunlight, I am confident that we may see load-shedding continue and if not get even, unfortunately, worse.

So, with no power, comes not internet, well at least from Desktop.

What does this mean for ecommerce and online sales in general over what has become the most important month of the year for many businesses?

Well, there are 24hrs in a day, so it’s not all doom and gloom and there is time to shop, especially online, which never sleeps.

However, if load-shedding continues (which let’s be honest it may), online stores/companies are going to have to be well prepared on two fronts:

  1. Online will see big peaks and troughs of web traffic and checkouts, and for this reason they will have to have well prepared engineers and serves to handle this spike as well as clinical payment gates to handle the critical mass.
  2. App, App , App ….this is where many of us may shop this black Friday due to possible loadshedding and in the same breath as point 1 , these apps need to be well merchandised and ready to handle some serious web traffic.

We have seen many companies over the last few years have both their websites and Apps crash, but this year may be a real test to the hard work and preparation put in to ensure that Black Friday is as successful as possible.

On the other side of the fence, brick, and mortar stores, if well prepared may see a large amount of consumers flock to the malls, which is a far cray from 2020.

Either way, let’s hope the lights stay on this Black Friday.

So, check your load-shedding schedule and be well prepared before you lose out on that deal.

Until then make sure to enjoy some of this week’s top sellers and black Friday special.

Stay safe, stay connected.
